OET (OET-RV)They rushed greedily at the plunder, grabbing sheep, cattle, and calves which they slaughtered right there and ate with the blood still in them.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) ate them with the blood

(Some words not found in UHB: and,pounced the,troops to/towards שלל and=they_took flock_of_sheep/goats and,cattle and=the_sons cattle and,slaughtered ground,on and,ate the,troops on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in the,blood )

The were so hungry they did not drain the blood first before eating. This was a violation of the Law which was given to Moses for the nation of Israel. This can be made explicit. Alternate translation: “ate them without draining the blood first as required by the law”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
