Here, to the face of represents being in front of David’s servants, that is, opposing them in battle. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. Alternate translation: [And the people of Israel were struck there in front of the servants of David] or [And the people of Israel were struck there as they opposed the servants of David]
