David is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [Deal gently for my sake]

David could have referred to Absalom as “my son” rather than as the young man. However, by rebelling against his father, Absalom was acting in a way unworthy of a son, so David did not describe him in terms of their family relationship. So while the expression “young man” can have the sense of “son” in some contexts, it would not be appropriate to translate it that way here.
