The phrase translated as to the gatekeeper could also be translated as “into the gate,” that is, down to where David was. That may be the correct translation, since David responds directly to what the watcher says, and there is no mention of a gatekeeper in the previous verse when the watcher similarly calls to David. Alternate translation: [into the gate]
