TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:18-38 Paul’s address to the elders of the church of Ephesus is a testimony regarding his life and ministry in Ephesus, calling for similar dedication from the leaders who would carry on the ministry. The sermon highlights Paul’s integrity and pastoral care (20:18-21, 26, 31), speaks about the future (20:22-23, 25, 29-30), warns against false teachers (20:29-30), and exhorts the elders to be watchful and faithful (20:28, 31). Paul modeled sacrificial, conscientious, servant leadership.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ἐπιπεσόντες ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον τοῦ Παύλου

/having/_embraced on the neck ¬the ˱of˲_Paul

The expression falling upon means that the Ephesian elders put their arms around Paul. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [embracing Paul] or [putting their arms around Paul]

Note 2 topic: translate-symaction

κατεφίλουν αὐτόν

˱they˲_/were/_kissing him

To kiss someone on the cheek was an expression of brotherly or friendly love in this culture. If this would not be clear to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: [they were kissing him on the cheek to express their brotherly love for him]
