TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:18-38 Paul’s address to the elders of the church of Ephesus is a testimony regarding his life and ministry in Ephesus, calling for similar dedication from the leaders who would carry on the ministry. The sermon highlights Paul’s integrity and pastoral care (20:18-21, 26, 31), speaks about the future (20:22-23, 25, 29-30), warns against false teachers (20:29-30), and exhorts the elders to be watchful and faithful (20:28, 31). Paul modeled sacrificial, conscientious, servant leadership.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

διαμαρτυρόμενος & τὴν εἰς Θεὸν μετάνοιαν καὶ πίστιν εἰς τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦν

testifying & ¬which toward God repentance and faith toward the Lord ˱of˲_us Jesus

Paul is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [testifying about the need for … repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τὴν εἰς Θεὸν μετάνοιαν καὶ πίστιν εἰς τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦν

¬which toward God repentance and faith toward the Lord ˱of˲_us Jesus

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the ideas of repentance and faith, you could express the same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [about the need to repent towards God and believe in our Lord Jesus]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

ἡμῶν

˱of˲_us

Paul is using the pronoun our to refer to himself and his listeners, so use the inclusive form of that word if your language marks that distinction.
