TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:21-39 In his covenant with Israel, the Lord established blessings and life as consequences of obedience, and curses and death as consequences of disobedience (Deut 27:11–28:68; 30:15-18). Solomon prayed for God to hear . . . and forgive when the people failed to keep God’s covenant. The seven “if-then” petitions of his prayer represented any future situation that the people of the covenant might encounter. In each case, Solomon described the situation and asked God to intervene to help his people.

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

God’s Plan to Restore

One of the best known verses in Chronicles lays out God’s plan for Israel: “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land” (2 Chr 7:14). This verse expresses the Chronicler’s understanding of how God works with his people. The concept has been described as a “theology of immediate retribution”: Each person experiences the consequences for obedience or failure within his or her own lifetime.

The vocabulary of this verse (humble, pray, turn, seek, heal) appears repeatedly in the Chronicler’s writing as he shows this principle operating in the lives of the kings of Judah. The celebration of Passover during Hezekiah’s reign provides one of the most prominent examples. In the very first month of his reign, Hezekiah began to restore the Temple (29:3). He extended an invitation to all Israel (including the people of the northern kingdom) to attend the Passover festival at Jerusalem (30:1). When Hezekiah’s messengers urged the people to turn to the Lord (30:6), many from the north humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem (30:11). So many people arrived that the Judeans could not accommodate them, and those from the north were not ready (ritually) to observe the Passover. Hezekiah prayed for the people as they resolved to seek the Lord (30:18-19). The Lord indeed healed the people (30:20), and they all were able to participate. The festival was going so well that it was extended another seven days (30:23). Hezekiah followed the very principles that Solomon had enunciated in his prayer. Manasseh provides another encouraging example of God’s redemption at work (33:11-23).

Those familiar with Chronicles would have understood well the preaching of John the Baptist as he called for repentance and healing (Matt 3:5-12). Failure to repent will result in judgment. But there is no situation beyond the reach of redemption for those willing to humble themselves before God.

When Solomon was speaking, these hypothetical situations had not happened, but Solomon knew that they might happen in the future. Use the form in your language for talking about events that have not happened but might happen in the future.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

(Occurrence 0) they return to you

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

Here “return to you” represents submitting to Yahweh again. Alternate translation: “they submit to you again”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) with all their heart and with all their soul

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

The idioms “with all their heart” means “completely” and “with all their soul” means “with all their being.” These two phrases have similar meanings. Alternate translation: “completely” (See also: figs-doublet)

(Occurrence 0) where they took them as captives

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

Alternate translation: “where their enemies took them as captives”

Note 4 topic: translate-symaction

(Occurrence 0) that they pray toward their land

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

This refers to Israel. Praying toward Israel would show that they were praying to Yahweh, the God of Israel. Alternate translation: “that they pray facing their land”

(Occurrence 0) toward the city that you chose

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

This refers to Jerusalem.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) the house that I have built

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

Solomon speaks of commanding the people to build the temple and telling them how to do it as if he himself had built it. Alternate translation: “the house that your people have built under my leadership” or “the house that I and your people have built”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) for your name

(Some words not found in UHB: and,return to,you in=all heart,their and=on/over=all soul,their in=land captivity,their which/who taken_captive DOM=them and,pray road/way_of land,their which/who you(ms)_put to,ancestors,their and,the,city which/who chosen and,toward_the,house which/who built for,name,your )

This could mean: (1) Yahweh’s name represents himself. Alternate translation: “for you” or (2) Yahweh’s name represents his reputation. Alternate translation: “for your reputation”
