Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

9:1-27 Joshua once again failed to consult God (9:14; cp. 7:2-4), this time over an unexpected request. Other ancient Near Eastern accounts tell only of a leader’s triumphs; this author also recorded the shortcomings of Joshua and Israel’s elders. The real hero of the story is God, whose accomplishments the author wished to tell.
Note 1 topic: grammar-collectivenouns
אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל
(a)_man Yisrael
The author is not referring to a specific man. He means the men of Israel in general and, as verses 15 and 18–21 indicate, most likely the leaders of Israel. Alternate translation: [the leaders of Israel]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom
וְעַתָּ֖ה
and=now
See how you translated in [1:2](../01/02.md) this expression that people of this time used to introduce the main business of a message.
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
כִּרְתוּ־לָ֥נוּ בְרִֽית
make to/for=us treaty
See the discussion of this phrase in the Introduction to this chapter. Alternate translation: [make a covenant with us]
