By the stronghold, the author means one of the specific “strongholds of Engedi” that he mentioned in [23:29](../23/29.md). You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and David and his men went back into one of the strongholds of Engedi]
