TSNTyndale Study Notes:

17:1-14 Ahithophel proposed a quick surprise strike against David with a small force (12,000 men, 17:1), which would give David no time to organize and fight back. Then David’s double-agent Hushai suggested taking more time to mobilize the entire army of Israel (17:11). This plan would supposedly give them an insurmountable numerical advantage and prevent David from engaging in guerilla tactics. Because the Lord was working against Absalom, he rejected Ahithophel’s good strategy and accepted Hushai’s bad advice (17:14; cp. 1 Kgs 12:1-15).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) then all Israel

(Some words not found in UHB: and=if to/towards (a)_city withdraws and,bring all Yisrael to/towards the=city the,that ropes and,drag DOM=him/it until the,valley until when not he/it_was_found there also/yet pebble )

This refers to Israel’s soldiers, not to all of Israel. Alternate translation: “then all of our soldiers”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) will bring ropes to that city and we will drag it into the river

(Some words not found in UHB: and=if to/towards (a)_city withdraws and,bring all Yisrael to/towards the=city the,that ropes and,drag DOM=him/it until the,valley until when not he/it_was_found there also/yet pebble )

This means that the soldiers would tear down the city walls and drag the pieces to river. Alternate translation: “will destroy the city and drag the stones to the river with ropes”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

(Occurrence 0) until there is no longer even a small stone found there

(Some words not found in UHB: and=if to/towards (a)_city withdraws and,bring all Yisrael to/towards the=city the,that ropes and,drag DOM=him/it until the,valley until when not he/it_was_found there also/yet pebble )

This is an exaggeration to describe how completely they will destroy the city. The would not literally sweep away every small stone from the city. Alternate translation: “until the city is completely destroyed”
