uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

τῷ Θεῷ, καὶ τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ, τῷ δυναμένῳ

¬the ˱to˲_God ˱to˲_the ¬which (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τά νῦν παρατίθεμαι ὑμᾶς τῷ Θεῷ καί τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ τῷ δυναμένῳ οἰκοδομῆσαι καί δοῦναι τήν κληρονομίαν ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις πᾶσιν)

Paul is speaking of the word of God’s grace as if it were a living thing that was able to do the things he describes. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to God who, through the word of his grace, is able]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ

¬the ˱to˲_the word ˱of˲_the grace ˱of˲_him

Paul is using the term word to mean the message about God’s grace that Jesus and his apostles shared by using words. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [to the message about his grace]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ

¬the ˱to˲_the word ˱of˲_the grace ˱of˲_him

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of grace, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [to the message about how God has graciously saved us]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τῷ δυναμένῳ οἰκοδομῆσαι

¬the ˱to˲_the ¬which being_able ˓to˒_build

Paul is speaking as if these believers were a wall or building or other structure and the word of God’s grace was making them higher and stronger. Alternate translation: [which is able to make you more confident and mature in your faith]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

τὴν κληρονομίαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί τά νῦν παρατίθεμαι ὑμᾶς τῷ Θεῷ καί τῷ λόγῳ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ τῷ δυναμένῳ οἰκοδομῆσαι καί δοῦναι τήν κληρονομίαν ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις πᾶσιν)

Paul is speaking as if the blessings that God gives believers were money or property that a child inherits from a father. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [God’s blessings]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις

the_‹ones› ˓having_been˒_sanctified

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who does the action, it is clear from the context that it was God. Alternate translation: [the ones whom God has sanctified]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

20:18-38 Paul’s address to the elders of the church of Ephesus is a testimony regarding his life and ministry in Ephesus, calling for similar dedication from the leaders who would carry on the ministry. The sermon highlights Paul’s integrity and pastoral care (20:18-21, 26, 31), speaks about the future (20:22-23, 25, 29-30), warns against false teachers (20:29-30), and exhorts the elders to be watchful and faithful (20:28, 31). Paul modeled sacrificial, conscientious, servant leadership.

OET (OET-LV)And now the things I_am_entrusting you_all to_ the _god, and to_the message of_the grace of_him, which being_able to_build and to_give the an_inheritance among all the ones having_been_sanctified.

OET (OET-RV)so now I’m leaving you all in God’s hands and with the message of his grace which is quite capable of helping you grow to receive the inheritance that’s for all those who’ve been purified.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
