OET (OET-LV) Be_taking_heed to_yourselves and to_all the flock, among which the the holy spirit set you_all overseers, to_be_shepherding the assembly of_the of_god, which he_procured through his his own blood.
OET (OET-RV) So now you elders look after your own lives and those of your flock because the holy spirit chose you as overseers to shepherd the assembly of God’s people who he paid for with his very own blood.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
τῷ ποιμνίῳ, ἐν ᾧ ὑμᾶς τὸ Πνεῦμα τὸ Ἅγιον ἔθετο ἐπισκόπους, ποιμαίνειν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
the flock among which you_all the Spirit ¬the Holy set overseers /to_be/_shepherding the assembly ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_God
Paul is speaking as if the believers were a flock of sheep and the elders to whom he is speaking were their shepherds. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the believers whose leaders the Holy Spirit has made you, to care for the church of God”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἣν περιεποιήσατο διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ ἰδίου
the assembly ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_God which ˱he˲_procured through his blood his own
Paul is referring to death by association with the way people may shed their blood when they die. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the church of God, which he obtained through his own death”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / pronouns
τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἣν περιεποιήσατο διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ ἰδίου
the assembly ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_God which ˱he˲_procured through his blood his own
The word translated obtained means to make something one’s own. The pronoun he may refer to Jesus, and this would mean that Jesus made the people of the church his own by dying for them. Alternate translation: “the people of the church of God, whom Jesus made his own by dying for them” or see next note for another possibility.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj
τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἣν περιεποιήσατο διὰ τοῦ αἵματος τοῦ ἰδίου
the assembly ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_God which ˱he˲_procured through his blood his own
This could also mean that God made the people of the church his own by sending his Son to die for them. In that case the translation would be “through the blood of his Own” and Paul would be using the adjective own as a noun to mean God’s own Son. Alternate translation: “the people of the church, whom God made his own through the death of his own Son”
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ Θεοῦ
the assembly ˱of˲_the ˱of˲_God
Here the term church refers to the people who belong to the church. If it would be clearer in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “the people of the church of God”
20:28 Paul refers to the church as God’s people and God’s flock (cp. 1 Pet 2:25; 5:2, 4). Elsewhere the church is called the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27; Eph 1:23; 4:12; Col 1:24); the bride of Christ (2 Cor 11:2; Rev 19:7; see Eph 5:25-32); the temple of the living God (1 Cor 3:16; 2 Cor 6:16); a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession (1 Pet 2:9); and God’s field, God’s building (1 Cor 3:9).
• Paul expected the leaders to feed and shepherd the church over which the Holy Spirit had appointed them as leaders (see 1 Tim 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-7; 1 Pet 5:1-4; cp. Acts 6:2-4).
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
