OET (OET-LV) How will_he_pursue one_person a_thousand and_two will_they_put_to_flight ten_thousand if not (cmp) rock_of_their sold_them and_YHWH given_up_them.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
Moses speaks a poetic song to the people of Israel. He continues to quote Yahweh’s words and tell them more of what they would have understood if they were wise ([Deuteronomy 32:29](../32/29.md)).
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
(Occurrence 0) How could one chase a thousand … Yahweh had given them up?
(Some words not found in UHB: how chase one(ms) a_thousand and,two put_~_toflight ten_thousand if not that/for/because/then/when rock_of,their sold,them and=YHWH given_~_up,them )
Moses uses a question to scold the people for not being wise enough to understand why their enemies are defeating them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement as in the UST.
Note 3 topic: translate-numbers
(Occurrence 0) How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight
(Some words not found in UHB: how chase one(ms) a_thousand and,two put_~_toflight ten_thousand if not that/for/because/then/when rock_of,their sold,them and=YHWH given_~_up,them )
You can make clear the understood information. Alternate translation: [How could 1 enemy soldier chase 1,000 of your men, and 2 enemy soldiers cause 10,000 of your men to run away] (See also: figs-ellipsis)
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) unless their Rock had sold them
(Some words not found in UHB: how chase one(ms) a_thousand and,two put_~_toflight ten_thousand if not that/for/because/then/when rock_of,their sold,them and=YHWH given_~_up,them )
The word “Rock” refers to Yahweh who is strong and able to protect his people. Alternate translation: [unless Yahweh, their Rock, had handed them over]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
(Occurrence 0) their Rock
(Some words not found in UHB: how chase one(ms) a_thousand and,two put_~_toflight ten_thousand if not that/for/because/then/when rock_of,their sold,them and=YHWH given_~_up,them )
Alternate translation: [The Rock] here is a proper name that Moses gives to Yahweh, who, like a rock, is strong and able to protect his people. Translate “Rock” as in [Deuteronomy 32:4](../32/04.md).
32:30 How could one person chase a thousand: When God gives his people over to destruction, they are vulnerable against all odds.
• their Rock: Here the metaphor is used ironically. The very one upon whom Israel should stand as the source of their strength will desert them because of their own wickedness and unfaithfulness (see 32:4).
OET (OET-LV) How will_he_pursue one_person a_thousand and_two will_they_put_to_flight ten_thousand if not (cmp) rock_of_their sold_them and_YHWH given_up_them.
Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
Acknowledgements: The Hebrew text, lemmas, and morphology are all thanks to the OSHB and some of the glosses are from Macula Hebrew.
