SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 11:37–54: Jesus criticized the Pharisees and the teachers of the law

In this section, a Pharisee invited Jesus to his house for a meal. The Pharisee was surprised that Jesus did not ritually wash his hands before he ate. Jesus then criticized the Pharisees because they carefully observed outward rituals but neglected true devotion to God. He specifically warned the Pharisees about three ways in which they displeased God. He then directed three additional warnings to the teachers of the law.

Some other headings for this section are:

Jesus’ Criticism of the Religious Leaders

There are parallel passages for this section in Matthew 23:1–36 and Mark 12:38–40.

11:50a–c

In some languages it may be more natural to reorder the clauses of 11:50. See the General Comment on 11:50a–c at the end of 11:50c for a way to reorder this verse.

11:50a

As a result, this generation will be charged

In 11:49c Jesus ended his quotation of what God said. In 11:50 he began again to speak directly without a quotation. In some languages it may be necessary to make this explicit. Two ways to do this are:

Express this in a way that is most natural in your language.

As a result: Scholars have interpreted the Greek word that the BSB translates as As a result in two different ways:

  1. It indicates result and introduces what would happen to the Jews as a result of their persecution of God’s messengers. For example:

So the people living now will be charged with the murder of every prophet (GW) (BSB, NIV, GNT, REB, NCV, GW, NLT)

  2. It indicates purpose and introduces the purpose of God in sending messengers. For example:

so that the blood of all the prophets…may be charged against this generation (NASB) (NJB, NET, NASB, and probably KJV and RSV)

It is recommended that you choose interpretation (1). It fits better with the change of speaker from God to Jesus. Jesus began to speak in his own words and told what would be the result of what happened. (The CEV and NLT do not translate this word.)

this generation: The phrase this generation refers to the people living at the time when Jesus was on earth. But it refers in particular to the Jews. Another way to translate this is:

the people of this time (GNT)

Because this included the people to whom Jesus was talking, some versions translate this as “you.” For example:

you who live now (NCV)

The phrase “this generation” last occurred in 11:32a.

will be charged: The Greek word that the BSB translates as will be charged means “will be declared guilty of.” It means that God will consider these people responsible for the murder of his prophets. He will require them to answer to him for what had happened. It is also implied that they were in some way guilty of these murders and that God would punish them. One way to make this explicit is:

will be punished (GNT)

11:50b

with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed

with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed: In this context blood is a figure of speech that refers to a violent death. Jewish people shed (or spilled, or poured out) the blood of the prophets when they killed them. God was going to punish the Jewish people of Jesus’ generation for these murders.

If you need to supply a subject and say who shed their blood, you could supply “your ancestors.” For example:

for the deaths of all the prophets that your(plur) ancestors killed

11:50c

since the foundation of the world,

since the foundation of the world: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the foundation of the world can also be translated as “the creation of the world.” In this context it refers to the time when God created the first people.

General Comment on 11:50a–c

In some languages, it will be more natural to change the order of certain parts of 11:50. For example:

50cFrom the creation of the world, 50bthe blood of the prophets has been shed. 50aThis generation will be held responsible for these deaths.

50cFrom the time God created the world, 50byour ancestors have killed the prophets. 50aYou people of today will be held responsible for their/these deaths.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τὸ αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν, τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης

in_order_that ˓may_be˒_sought_out (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τό αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τό ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)

The implication seems to be that God will also send prophets to the people living at this time because the people’s violent persecution of the prophets will constitute a conscious, deliberate rejection of God’s message that will provide grounds for definitive judgment. That is because the people of this time should know better than to persecute the prophets, based on the prominent bad example of their own ancestors. Alternate translation: [so that the people living at this time, who should have known better, can be held accountable for the blood that people have shed of all the prophets since the beginning of the world]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τὸ αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν, τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης

in_order_that ˓may_be˒_sought_out (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τό αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τό ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who will do the action. Alternate translation: [so that God can hold the people living at this time accountable for the blood of all the prophets that people shed from the foundation of the world]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τὸ αἷμα & τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τό αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τό ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who has done the action. Alternate translation: [the blood … that people have shed]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὸ αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν, τὸ ἐκχυννόμενον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τό αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τό ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)

Jesus uses the term the blood … that has been shed to refer to the deaths of the prophets by association with their blood. Alternate translation: [the deaths of all the prophets]

ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἵνα ἐκζητηθῇ τό αἷμα πάντων τῶν προφητῶν τό ἐκχυννόμενον ἀπό καταβολῆς κόσμου ἀπό τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης)

Alternate translation: [since the beginning of the world] or [since God made the world]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τῆς γενεᾶς ταύτης

¬the generation this

Jesus uses the term generation to mean the people who were born in the current generation. Alternate translation: [the people living at this time]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

11:42-52 What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! Woes are the opposite of blessings (see study note on 6:24-26). Jesus pronounced six woes, three against the Pharisees (11:42, 43, 44) and three against the teachers of religious law (11:46, 47, 52).
