OET (OET-RV)Then he told his followers, “The time will come when you’ll be wanting to see humanity’s child again even for a day, but you won’t see him.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 17:20–37: Jesus taught about the time when the kingdom of God will come

The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.

Examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught about when the Son of Man will come

The coming of the Kingdom of God

Parallel passages are in Matthew 24:17–18, 24:23–28, 24:37–41, and Mark 13:14–16, 13:19–23.

17:22a

Then He said to the disciples, “The time is coming

17:22b

when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man,

17:22a–b

Then He said to the disciples: For help in translating disciples, see the note at 17:1a.

The time is coming when you will long to see…the Son of Man: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as The time is coming when is literally “days will come when.” Jesus referred here to a future time when he would not be with his disciples. He implied that during this time they would experience sorrow and troubles. In those days of trouble, they would greatly desire to see him.

Some other ways to translate this part of the verse are:

In the future you will yearn to see…the Son of Man

You will come to some days when you will greatly desire to see…the Son of Man

Someday you will long to see…the Son of Man

There will be days when you will urgently want to see…the Son of Man

Refer to this future time in a natural way in your language.

see: The verb that the BSB translates literally as see refers here to living during that time and experiencing one of the days. It does not refer literally to observing something.

one of the days of the Son of Man: The phrase the days of the Son of Man refers to the future joyful time when the Son of Man will rule as Messiah. The phrase one of the days of the Son of Man refers to any of those days when the Son of Man will be ruling. Some scholars believe that it refers to the first of the days, that is, the day when the Son of Man begins to rule. Of the fourteen English versions consulted, the NLT is the only one that follows this view, having “the day when the Son of Man returns.” The phrase one of probably emphasizes the disciples’ desire to see the days of the Son of Man. Some ways to express this emphasis in English are:

even one of the days of the Son of Man

at least one day when the Son of Man will be ruling

the Son of Man: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as the Son of Man is literally “the Son of the human/person.” Jesus used this title to imply that:

  1. he was a true human being, and he represented all people.

  2. he came from God and had authority from God.

Try to use an expression that implies both meanings. Some expressions that translators have used are:

the Man whom God Sent

the True Man from God/Heaven

the Representative of Mankind

The Older Brother of All People

In some cases, an unusual title may correctly suggest a deeper meaning. For example:

the Child of a Person

the One who was Born as a Human

the peoples’ child/offspring

Translators have also used expressions that are more literal. These more literal expressions may be appropriate where readers are familiar with a literal title in another version.

In some languages it may be necessary to use a form such as “I” or “me” to indicate that Jesus was referring to himself. For example:

me, the Son of Man

I who am the people’s child

This term first occurs in Luke at 5:24a. See also “Son of Man” in KBT.

17:22c

but you will not see it.

but you will not see it: The BSB has supplied the word it, which is not in the Greek text. Jesus was saying that his disciples would not at that time see the Son of Man. What they longed for would not happen yet. They must endure many troubles without seeing Jesus in person, because it would not yet be time for him to return.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

17:22 you will long to see the day when the Son of Man returns (or you will long for even one day with the Son of Man): The Greek says simply, you will long to see the days of the Son of Man, which may refer to his time on earth with his disciples or to the time of his second coming.

OET (OET-LV)And he_said to the apprentices/followers:
Days will_be_coming when you_all_will_be_desiring to_see one of_the days of_the son of_ the _Man, and you_all_˓will˒_ not _be_seeing it.

OET (OET-RV)Then he told his followers, “The time will come when you’ll be wanting to see humanity’s child again even for a day, but you won’t see him.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
