Section 17:20–37: Jesus taught about the time when the kingdom of God will come

The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.

Paragraph 17:34–37

For 17:34–35 see also Matthew 24:40–41. These verses indicate that some people who live and work close to one another will be separated at the time when Jesus returns.

17:35a

Two women will be grinding grain together:

There will be two women grinding grain together.
Two women may be preparing food together.

Two women will be grinding grain together: This clause refers to grinding grain to make flour. Women placed grain on one flat millstone and placed another flat millstone on top of the grain. They rotated the top stone on the lower stone. This crushed the grain into flour. This was a normal activity for women to do. See the note on “millstone” in 17:2b. Here is another way to translate this:

There will be two women grinding grain together (NET)

If people do not know about grinding grain in your area, you may want to use a more general phrase. For example:

Two women will be preparing food together

grain: The grain was probably wheat, or perhaps barley.

17:35b

One will be taken and the other left.”

I will take one, but I will leave the other one.
God will take one and will leave the other behind.

one will be taken and the other left: This clause is basically the same as 17:34b. The difference is that the people here are women instead of two married people (or men). Be sure to use the proper forms in your language for referring back to women.

Jesus is speaking of a hypothetical situation that might occur at this time. It may be helpful to make this a separate sentence. Alternate translation: [Suppose that when this happens, two women are grinding grain together]

The verb is feminine, so this means “two women.” (In [17:34](../17/34.md) and [17:36](../17/36.md), grammatically masculine forms are used, but conventionally in Greek that means that the people are not known to be all women; they could be men or women, so a general term such as “people” would be appropriate in those verses.) Alternate translation: [two women]

grinding

The term grinding refers to the process of breaking up grain into very small pieces so that it can be used for cooking. If your readers would not be familiar with grain, you could use a general expression. Alternate translation: [grinding grain] or [preparing food]
