OET (OET-LV)And they_will_be_saying to_you_all:
Behold, there he_is, or:
Behold, here he_is, you_all_may_ not _go_away nor you_all_may_pursue.

OET (OET-RV)Some people will tell you all, ‘Look, there he is!’ or ‘Hey, here he is!’ but don’t go looking or following them,

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 17:20–37: Jesus taught about the time when the kingdom of God will come

The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.

Examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught about when the Son of Man will come

The coming of the Kingdom of God

Parallel passages are in Matthew 24:17–18, 24:23–28, 24:37–41, and Mark 13:14–16, 13:19–23.

17:23a

People will tell you, ‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’

This verse begins with a common conjunction that versions such as the RSV translate as “And.” Some other English versions have “Then,” and many do not have a conjunction. Begin the verse in a natural way in your language.

People will tell you: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as People will tell you is literally “They-will-say to you.” “They” refers to people in general. For example:

People will say to you (NCV)

‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’: The Greek clause that the BSB translates as ‘Look, there He is!’ or ‘Look, here He is!’ is literally “Look, there! (or) Look, here!” This clause is very similar to the clause “‘Look, here it is,’ or ‘There it is’” in 17:21a. Notice that 17:21a and 17:23a use different orders for “Here…” and “There…” You may use a natural order in your language for both verses.

The BSB has supplied the pronoun He to refer to the Son of Man (Jesus). People will say that the Son of Man is there or here. Here are some ways you can translate this:

17:23b

Do not go out or chase after them.

Do not go out or chase after them: The Greek expression that the BSB translates as Do not go out or chase after them is more literally “do not go, do not pursue.” For example:

Do not go, do not follow them. (RSV)

It indicates here that the disciples should not follow anyone who claims that the Son of Man has returned and claims to know where he is. Other ways to translate this are:

…don’t go looking for him. (CEV)

Stay where you are; don’t go away and search. (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν, ἰδοὺ, ἐκεῖ, ἤ, ἰδοὺ, ὧδε

˱they˲_˓will_be˒_saying ˱to˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδού ἐκεῖ ἤ Ἰδού ὧδε μή ἀπέλθητε μηδέ διώξητε)

The implication in context is that Jesus is speaking of the Son of Man or Messiah. Alternate translation: [people will say to you, ‘Look, the Messiah is over there!’ or, ‘Look, the Messiah is over here]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν, ἰδοὺ, ἐκεῖ, ἤ, ἰδοὺ, ὧδε

˱they˲_˓will_be˒_saying ˱to˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδού ἐκεῖ ἤ Ἰδού ὧδε μή ἀπέλθητε μηδέ διώξητε)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [people will tell you that the Messiah is over in one place or with them in another place]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἰδοὺ & ἰδοὺ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδού ἐκεῖ ἤ Ἰδού ὧδε μή ἀπέλθητε μηδέ διώξητε)

These people would be using the term behold to get others to focus their attention on what they were saying. Alternate translation: [Hey … Hey]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

μὴ ἀπέλθητε μηδὲ διώξητε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδού ἐκεῖ ἤ Ἰδού ὧδε μή ἀπέλθητε μηδέ διώξητε)

The expressions go out and run after mean similar things. Jesus is likely using repetition for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could combine these terms into a single expression. Alternate translation: [Do not go where they tell you]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μὴ ἀπέλθητε μηδὲ διώξητε

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ἐροῦσιν ὑμῖν Ἰδού ἐκεῖ ἤ Ἰδού ὧδε μή ἀπέλθητε μηδέ διώξητε)

The implication is that people would go to look for the Messiah. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state that explicitly. Alternate translation: [Do not go where they tell you to look for the Messiah]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

17:20-37 This is the first of two discourses in Luke’s Gospel on the coming of the Kingdom and the return of the Son of Man (see also ch 21).
