SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 17:20–37: Jesus taught about the time when the kingdom of God will come

The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.

Examples of headings for this section are:

Jesus taught about when the Son of Man will come

The coming of the Kingdom of God

Parallel passages are in Matthew 24:17–18, 24:23–28, 24:37–41, and Mark 13:14–16, 13:19–23.

Paragraph 17:28–30

For the background to this paragraph, see Genesis chapters 18 and 19. This paragraph is similar to 17:26–27.

17:30

It will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

It will be just like that: The Greek words that the BSB translates as It will be just like that are literally “according to these things.” They refer back to the behaviors of people during the times of Noah and Lot (17:26–29). The illustrations imply that people will be living their normal lives. They will be totally unaware and unprepared for the Son of Man to come. In some languages it may be necessary to make some of this explicit:

In the same way, people will be living their normal lives

In the same way, people will be unprepared

on the day the Son of Man is revealed: This phrase refers to the day or time when Jesus will return to earth and everyone will see him. The phrase is passive. Some ways to translate it are:

It is important to make clear that the day refers to the Son of Man’s future coming. Some ways to make this clear are:

when the Son of Man appears (CEV)

when the Son of Man comes again (NCV)

the Son of Man: For help in translating the Son of Man, see the note at 17:22a–b.

is revealed: The Greek word that the BSB translates as is revealed means “to reveal, to disclose, to make fully known.”

uW Translation Notes:

κατὰ ταὐτὰ ἔσται

κατὰ ταὐτὰ ἔσται

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: κατά Ταῦτα ἔσται ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ Υἱός τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου ἀποκαλύπτεται)

The implication is that people will be occupied with ordinary activities and not expecting anything out of the ordinary to happen. Alternate translation: [In the same way, people will not be ready]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ

˱in˲_that day

Jesus is using the term day to refer to a specific time. Alternate translation: [at the time when]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου ἀποκαλύπτεται

the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: κατά Ταῦτα ἔσται ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ ὁ Υἱός τοῦ Ἀνθρώπου ἀποκαλύπτεται)

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: [the Son of Man appears] or [the Son of man returns]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
