SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

Some other headings for this section are:

More Proverbs of Solomon (NIV)

Proverbs of Solomon Collected by Hezekiah (NET)

These are also wise things that Solomon said

Paragraph 27:23–27

This paragraph advises the reader to take good care of his sheep and goats (27:23). The reason is that accumulated wealth and a stable government do not last (27:24). When he does the work to provide food for the animals (27:25), they will provide a continuing source of clothing, income, and food for his family (27:26–27).

27:24

This verse gives the reason or motivation for the reader to take good care of his animals. See the paragraph summary for 27:23–27. Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

24afor riches are not forever,

24bnor does a crown endure to every generation.

27:24a

for riches are not forever,

for riches are not forever: In this context, the word riches may refer to:

Try to translate in a way that can refer to either of these options.Longman, Fox, Cohen, McKane, and Cook think that the emphasis in 27:24a is on wealth in the form of money or commercial investments. But UBS, Toy, and Whybray think that the word “riches” here may refer to any kind of accumulated wealth, not only money gained from investments or commercial dealings, but also farm products. For example:

because wealth is not permanent (GNT)

for possessions do not last forever (REB)

27:24b

nor does a crown endure to every generation.

nor does a crown endure to every generation: In Hebrew, this clause is a rhetorical question. For example, the says:

and does a crown endure to all generations? (ESV)

This rhetorical question emphasizes that a crown does not endure to all generations.

crown: In this context, the word crown is a figure of speech. It represents the power or authority of a ruler or government. The clause indicates that a particular ruler may not be able to pass on his authority to future generations. Some other ways to translate this line are:

and the crown might not be passed to the next generation (NLT)

nor does one dynasty retain power through all generations (VOICE)

nor do governments go on forever (NCV)

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

נֵ֝֗זֶר

crown

Here, crown refers to a king’s rule over his kingdom. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “a king’s rule”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

לְד֣וֹר וָדֽוֹר

[is]_to,a_generation (Some words not found in UHB: that/for/because/then/when not [is],forever riches and=if crown [is]_to,a_generation דור )

This is an idiom that means “forever.” If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly, as in the UST.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

27:23-27 Agricultural property can provide food and clothing from generation to generation; these resources require continuous labor and attention or, like riches, they disappear.
