SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

Some other headings for this section are:

More Proverbs of Solomon (NIV)

Proverbs of Solomon Collected by Hezekiah (NET)

These are also wise things that Solomon said

Paragraph 27:23–27

This paragraph advises the reader to take good care of his sheep and goats (27:23). The reason is that accumulated wealth and a stable government do not last (27:24). When he does the work to provide food for the animals (27:25), they will provide a continuing source of clothing, income, and food for his family (27:26–27).

27:27

This verse describes the benefit of having female goats that are well fed. They will provide enough milk to meet the needs of the entire household. Notice the progression from the owner/master (“you”) to his family (“your household”) to the servants who had the lowest status (“maidservants”):

27aYou will have plenty of goats’ milk

27bto feed you—food for your household

27cand nourishment for your maidservants.

27:27a

You will have plenty of goats’ milk

27:27b

to feed you—food for your household

27:27a–b

You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed you—food for your household: In Hebrew, this line is more literally “There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household.” Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

And you will have enough goats’ milk for yourself, your family,… (NLT)

And there will be enough milk from your goats to sustain you, your family,… (VOICE)

The rest of the goats will provide milk for you and your family,… (GNT)

27:27c

and nourishment for your maidservants.

and nourishment for your maidservants: In Hebrew, this line is literally “and life for your maids.” The word “life” here is a figure of speech. It represents the food that is necessary to provide good nourishment for the servant women.Waltke (p. 394) makes it clear that the maids are well nourished. He uses the phrase “abundant, rich goats’ milk.”

Some other ways to translate this line are:

and nourishment for your servant-girls (NRSV)

and for your servant women as well (GNT)

maidservants: In Hebrew, this word can refer to any girl or young woman. Here it refers to female servants. It implies that the goats provided enough milk to feed even the lowest-ranked servants in the household.Fox (p. 816). It does not imply that male servants received no milk.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְ֝חַיִּ֗ים לְנַעֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ

and,life of,maids_of,your

Here Solomon implies that there will also be enough milk of female goats to provide life for your young women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “and there will be enough goat’s milk to sustain the life of your young women”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְ֝חַיִּ֗ים

and,life

Here, life refers to the nourishment needed to sustain life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and nourishment”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

27:23-27 Agricultural property can provide food and clothing from generation to generation; these resources require continuous labor and attention or, like riches, they disappear.
