SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:10–19: Sixth lesson: Follow wise behavior and avoid the behavior of evil men

In this lesson, the father compares two lifestyles by using the metaphor of two paths. After an opening admonition to listen to his teaching (4:10), he describes the benefits of walking in the way of wisdom (4:11–13). He then describes the way of evil (4:14–17), and concludes by contrasting the two paths (4:18–19). Since the figure of walking on a path is used throughout this lesson, it is recommended that you keep this figurative idea if possible.

Some other headings for this section are:

Stay on the Path of Wisdom (GW)

The Right Way and the Wrong Way (CEV)

4:15

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

15a Avoid it; do not travel on it.

15b Turn from it and pass on by.

This verse describes a situation in which the path of the young man crosses or comes close to the path of wicked people. When this happens, the young man should change his course and keep going without stopping.Fox (pages 180–181).

4:15a

Avoid it; do not travel on it.

4:15a–b

Avoid it; do not travel on it. Turn from it: Notice that the first three commands have similar meanings to the commands in 4:14. By giving one command after another, the father emphasizes that it is important to totally avoid evil behavior. The first verb literally means “avoid” or “shun” (the evil path). The third verb means “swerve aside” or “change direction.”

4:15b

Turn from it and pass on by.

pass on by: The Hebrew verb that the BSB translates as pass on by usually means “cross,” “pass through” or “move from one place to another.” In this context, it means “keep going without stopping.” Other ways to translate this command are:

keep going (CEV)

keep on walking (GW)

General Comment on 4:15a–b

The first meaning lines in the Display for 4:15a and 4:15b keep the figure of walking on a path. The second meaning lines translate the meaning without using this figure of speech.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ & בּ֑וֹ & מֵעָלָ֣יו

avoid,it & in/on/over=him/it & from,on,it

In this verse, the pronoun it refers to “the way of evil ones” mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “Avoid the way of evil ones … that way … from that evil way”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ אַל־תַּעֲבָר־בּ֑וֹ שְׂטֵ֖ה מֵעָלָ֣יו וַעֲבֽוֹר

avoid,it not travel in/on/over=him/it turn_away from,on,it and,pass_on

In this verse, Solomon speaks of behaving wickedly as if wicked behavior were a path that people could pass through, veer from, and pass on. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Avoid acting evilly; do not try it; completely avoid doing evil and do not even think about it”
