⇔ ≈ and healing to their entire bodies.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:20–27: Seventh Lesson: Concentrate on following a righteous lifestyle

This section begins with the typical introduction (4:20–22). The father/teacher then exhorts his son/student to follow a righteous life. He mentions different parts of the body (ear, heart, mouth, eyes, feet) to emphasize that doing what is right involves the whole person (4:23–27).

Another possible heading for this section is:

Always doing what is right

4:22

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

22aFor they are life to those who find them

22band health to the whole body.

4:22a

For they are life to those who find them,

For: The word For introduces the reason why the young man should obey the commands of 4:20–21.

they are life: For this phrase, see the notes on 3:22a and 4:13b.

those who find them: The verb that the BSB translates as find means to find something after searching for it intentionally. It does not mean to find accidentally. To find a person’s words (the referent of them, 4:20) means to accept and understand them. For example:

anyone who discovers their meaning (NLT96)

It also implies to heed or obey them.

4:22a–b

(combined/reordered)

4:22b

and health to the whole body.

and health to the whole body: The Hebrew word that the BSB translates as body is literally translated as “flesh” by the ESV. It is a figure of speech (synecdoche) that refers to the body and perhaps more generally to a person’s whole being. Some other ways to translate this phrase are:

good health for you (CEV)

health to their whole being (REB)

General Comment on 4:22a–b

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. See 4:22a–b (combined/reordered) in the Display.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

כִּֽי

that/for/because/then/when

For here indicates that what follows are more reasons why someone should pay attention to the father's words, as stated in [4:20-21](../04/20.md). Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “Pay attention to my words, because”

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

הֵ֭ם לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם

they to,[those_of,who]_find_them

In this verse, the pronouns they and them refer to the “sayings” mentioned in [4:20](../04/20.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “my sayings … to those who find my sayings”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

חַיִּ֣ים הֵ֭ם לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם

life(pl) they to,[those_of,who]_find_them

Here Solomon speaks of his sayings as if they were life for those who obey them. He means that those who do what he says will have good lives. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “they allow those who find them to have good lives” or “they cause those who find them to live well”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם

to,[those_of,who]_find_them

Here Solomon speaks of people remembering his sayings as if those people have found them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to those who remember them”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וּֽלְכָל־בְּשָׂר֥וֹ מַרְפֵּֽא

and=to/for=all flesh_of,his health

Here Solomon uses the word flesh to refer to a person’s whole body, which is made of flesh. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and healing to all of his body”

Note 6 topic: grammar-collectivenouns

בְּשָׂר֥וֹ

flesh_of,his

Although his is singular, here it refers to all who remember Solomon’s sayings. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this plainly. Alternate translation: “their flesh”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וּֽלְכָל־בְּשָׂר֥וֹ מַרְפֵּֽא

and=to/for=all flesh_of,his health

Here Solomon speaks of his sayings as if they were healing for those who remember them. He means that those who remember what he says will have healthy bodies. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “and they preserve their health” or “and they cause their bodies to stay healthy”
