Section 4:1–9: Fifth lesson: You will gain many benefits if you acquire and value wisdom

This lesson begins with an introduction (4:1–4a) that exhorts the listeners to pay attention to their father’s words. It is followed by the main part of the lesson (4:4b–9) about the benefits of acquiring wisdom. This main part is unusual, because it quotes the words that the speaker’s father taught him when he was a boy.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning. In each line there is a command followed by a promised result.

^6a Do not forsake wisdom, and she will preserve you;

^6b love her, and she will guard you.

4:6a–b

Do not turn^(sing) your back on wisdom, but rather love her. Then she will protect and care for you.
If you^(sing) love wisdom and do not reject it, it will protect you from evil and take care of you.

Do not forsake wisdom, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will guard you: Here again wisdom is personified as a woman, using the feminine pronouns she and her. The author describes her as someone who protects and takes care of those who love her.

Some English versions capitalize wisdom here. Others do not. Some use the feminine pronouns. Others use the pronoun “it.” For example:

If you love Wisdom and don’t reject her (CEV)

Do not abandon wisdom, and she will protect you (GNT)

Hold on to wisdom, and it will take care of you (NCV)

Use whatever forms are natural in your language for this kind of personification.

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. It is also possible to translate the commands as “if” clauses. See 4:6a–b (combined/reordered) in the Display.

Both occurrences of and in this verse indicate that what follows are the results of the phrases that precede them. Use the most natural way in your language to indicate results. Alternate translation: [and it will result in her preserving you … and it will result in her guarding you]

In [4:6–9](../04/06.md) Solomon speaks of wisdom as if it were a woman. See the discussion of this in the Chapter Introduction. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly as in the UST or use a simile. Alternate translation: [Do not forsake wisdom, and wisdom will be like a woman who preserves you; love wisdom, and wisdom will be like a woman who guards you]
