Section 4:10–19: Sixth lesson: Follow wise behavior and avoid the behavior of evil men

In this lesson, the father compares two lifestyles by using the metaphor of two paths. After an opening admonition to listen to his teaching (4:10), he describes the benefits of walking in the way of wisdom (4:11–13). He then describes the way of evil (4:14–17), and concludes by contrasting the two paths (4:18–19). Since the figure of walking on a path is used throughout this lesson, it is recommended that you keep this figurative idea if possible.

Paragraph 4:18–19

This paragraph gives a concluding contrast between the lives of righteous and wicked people. In Hebrew, it begins with a word that is often translated as “and” or “but.” A number of English versions, including the BSB, place this word at the beginning of 4:19. Some versions leave it implied.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning. Both the parallel parts compare the lives of righteous people to light.

The path of the righteous: In this verse, the phrase path of the righteous probably refers to the things that righteous people experience during their lives.According to Fox (page 182), the path metaphor does not refer here to a person’s behavior. It refers to the course of a person’s life. Here is another way to translate this:

This is what people who do what is right will experience in their lives. Their lives will be like…

like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday: In these parallel comparisons, the second phrase clarifies and expands the thought of the first. The course of life of righteous people is compared to the light of the sun at dawn. The light gets steadily brighter until it reaches its full brightness.

until midday: The word translated midday probably refers to the bright light of the daytime in contrast to the dim light of early dawn. In the middle of the day the sun is shining at maximum brightness. Other ways to translate this phrase are:

broad day (REB)

full light of day (NIV)

full daylight (NCV)

Scholars do not agree on the figurative meaning of light in this context. Several think it refers primarily to safety. Others think that it describes increasing knowledge, happiness, or prosperity. Because there are several possible points of comparison, it is recommended that you not make one point of comparison explicit in the translation.

Here, the light of brightness could refer to the first sunlight that appears in the morning. In this case, it would contrast with the full light when the day is established. Here Solomon compares the path of the righteous ones to the light of the sun in the morning. He means that righteous people are safe because they understand what God wants them to do during their lives, just like people can walk safely on a path because the light enables them to see where they are going. Alternate translation: “the path of the righteous leading to more and more wisdom and safety just as the path of the sun leads to more and more light until midday”
