Section 4:10–19: Sixth lesson: Follow wise behavior and avoid the behavior of evil men

In this lesson, the father compares two lifestyles by using the metaphor of two paths. After an opening admonition to listen to his teaching (4:10), he describes the benefits of walking in the way of wisdom (4:11–13). He then describes the way of evil (4:14–17), and concludes by contrasting the two paths (4:18–19). Since the figure of walking on a path is used throughout this lesson, it is recommended that you keep this figurative idea if possible.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

For: The word For introduces the reason for the commands in 4:14–15 that the young man should avoid evil behavior. The reason is that evil behavior is addictive. Some English versions leave this word implied. For example:

Wicked people cannot sleep… (GW)

Introduce this reason in a natural way in your language.

they cannot sleep unless they do evil; they are deprived of slumber until they make someone fall: These two parallel statements are examples of hyperbole—deliberate exaggeration for the sake of emphasis. Both lines emphasize that wicked people are very addicted to doing wrong. They even find it difficult to fall asleep at night if they have not recently committed an evil deed.

they cannot sleep…they are deprived of slumber: The phrase they are deprived of slumber is a figurative way of saying they cannot sleep. The second expression adds emphasis to the first. If there is a figurative expression in your language for sleeplessness, you may want to use it, if it will add emphasis. Otherwise, you may want to rearrange the parallel items in these two lines (see the General Comment for 4:16a–b) or use a single expression for sleeplessness.

unless they do evil…until they make someone fall: The second expression gives a specific example of what it means to do evil. The phrase make someone fall or “stumble” (NRSV) is a figurative expression that means “hurt someone” (GNT).

In some languages, it may be more natural to combine and/or reorder the parallel parts. For example:

They cannot sleep or rest until they do wrong or harm someone.

For here indicates that what follows are reasons why someone should avoid doing evil, as stated in the previous verse. Use a connector in your language that makes it clear that what follows is a reason for what came before. Alternate translation: “Avoid acting wickedly because”

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. The second emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the phrases with a word other than and in order to show that the second phrase is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. In this verse, the pronoun they refers to the wicked people mentioned in [4:14](../04/14.md). If it would be clearer in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “wicked ones do not sleep if they do not do evil, and the sleep of wicked ones is robbed if those wicked ones do not cause stumbling”

In these two clauses, Solomon exaggerates to express how intensely these wicked people desire to do evil actions. Solomon did not literally mean that these people could not sleep if they had not done evil. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a different way to express the emphasis. Alternate translation: “they desire to do evil so much that it is as if they would not be able to sleep unless they did evil”
