Section 4:1–9: Fifth lesson: You will gain many benefits if you acquire and value wisdom

This lesson begins with an introduction (4:1–4a) that exhorts the listeners to pay attention to their father’s words. It is followed by the main part of the lesson (4:4b–9) about the benefits of acquiring wisdom. This main part is unusual, because it quotes the words that the speaker’s father taught him when he was a boy.

Notice the parallel parts that are similar in meaning:

It will be as if you^(sing) were wearing a beautiful wreath of flowers or a splendid crown on your head.” That is what my father used to say to me.

She will set a garland of grace on your head; she will present you with a crown of beauty: This verse expresses in figurative language the meaning of “she will honor you” in the previous verse. Putting a graceful wreath of flowers or a splendid gold crown on someone’s head symbolized that they were being publicly honored. For the phrase garland of grace, see the note on 1:9a. The parallel phrase, a crown of beauty, means “a splendid crown.” It may be translated as:

a beautiful crown (NRSV)

a glorious crown (REB)

Notice that this is the last verse that quotes the words of the speaker’s father. In some languages, this may need to be indicated explicitly. See 4:9a–b (combined/reordered) in the Display.

These two clauses mean basically the same thing. The second clause emphasizes the meaning of the first by repeating the same idea with different words. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could connect the clauses with a word that shows that the second clause is repeating the first one, not saying something additional. Alternate translation: “She will give for your head a garland of grace; yes, with a crown of splendor she will cover you”

In this verse, Solomon speaks of wisdom as if it were a woman. See the discussion of this in the Chapter Introduction. Here Solomon speaks of the honor that a person will have from gaining wisdom as if wisdom placed a crown upon that person’s head. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly or use a simile. Alternate translation: “wisdom will cause people to honor you” or “wisdom will be like someone who puts a crown of splendor on your head”
