uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-poetry

and=it_became the,attack the,first which/who killed Yōnātān/(Jonathan) and,bearer_of armor_of,his

For emphasis, the author is using a construction in which a verb and its object come from the same root. You may be able to use the same construction in your language. If not, your language may have another way of showing emphasis. See how you translated the term striking in [4:10](../04/10.md). Alternate translation: [And the first slaughter that Jonathan and his armor-bearer made was] or [And so Jonathan and his armor-bearer made a great slaughter, it was]

Note 2 topic: translate-unknown

כְּבַחֲצִ֥י מַעֲנָ֖ה צֶ֥מֶד שָׂדֶֽה

as/like,in/on/at/with,half_of furrow acre_of land

The author is expressing a distance in terms of his culture. A yoke of a field means a field that a pair of oxen could plow in a day (about an acre or 0.4 hectares). This furrow would be one side of that (about 210 feet or 65 meters), so half a furrow would mean about 100 feet or 30 meters. Jonathan and his armor-bearer penetrated this far into the Philistine camp, killing any soldiers who tried to stop them. Alternate translation: [over a distance of about 30 meters] or [over a distance of about 100 feet]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:1-52 Saul’s behavior in this chapter further justifies his dismissal as king (13:8-14; see also ch 15). Saul was alienated from both Samuel and his heroic son Jonathan. Chapter 14 anticipates the significant role that Jonathan played in the transition from Saul’s kingship to David’s.
