OET (OET-LV)and_ Yōnātān/(Jonathan) _he/it_said to the_young_man armor_of_his the_bearer_of come and_go_over to the_garrison_of the_uncircumcised the_these perhaps he_will_act YHWH to/for_us if/because there_is_not to/for_YHWH limitation from_saving in/on/at/with_many or in/on/at/with_few.

OET (OET-RV)Yonatan said to his servant carrying his equipment, “Come on. Let’s pass over to that group of these uncircumcised ones. Perhaps Yahweh will help us, because it doesn’t matter to him whether he saves using many people or just a few.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־הַנַּ֣עַר ׀ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו לְכָה֙ וְנַעְבְּרָ֗ה

and=he/it_said Yōnātān/(Jonathan) to/towards the,young_man lifting/taking armor_of,his come, and,go_over

The author is resuming the story of Jonathan after providing extensive background information in verses 2–5. He is repeating what Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, which he first reported in verse 1. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for resuming a story after providing background information.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

הָעֲרֵלִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה

the,uncircumcised the=these

Jonathan is using the adjective uncircumcised as a noun to mean people who do not worship Yahweh. He is using this as a term of derision, suggesting that since the Philistines do not worship Yahweh and obey his laws, they will not be formidable opponents. Your language may have a comparable term of derision that you can use in your translation. Alternate translation: [these uncircumcised Philistines] or [these heathen]

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

כִּ֣י

that/for/because/then/when

Here the word for introduces not a reason but an explanation. Alternate translation: [after all]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

אֵ֤ין לַֽיהוָה֙ מַעְצ֔וֹר לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ בְּרַ֖ב א֥וֹ בִמְעָֽט

not to/for=YHWH hinder from,saving in/on/at/with,many or in/on/at/with,few

If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a positive expression to translate this double negative that consists of the negative particle no and the negative noun hindrance. Alternate translation: [Yahweh is perfectly able to save by many or by few]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

בְּרַ֖ב א֥וֹ בִמְעָֽט

in/on/at/with,many or in/on/at/with,few

Jonathan is using the adjectives many and few as nouns to mean groups of soldiers. Your language may use adjectives in the same way. If not, you can translate these adjectives with equivalent phrases. Alternate translation: [by many soldiers or by few soldiers]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

14:6 pagans (literally uncircumcised): A disdainful term for enemies of Israel (see also 17:36; 31:4).
• Perhaps: Jonathan had no guarantee of survival, but he was certain that God could grant them victory despite the odds. Victory was in God’s hands; Jonathan offered himself as an instrument God could use.
• many warriors or only a few: Jonathan knew what Gideon had learned many years earlier (see Judg 7:2-8).
