OET (OET-RV)Let our master please get your servants to find a man who knows how to play the harp. Then, whenever the evil spirit from God is on you, then he’ll play it and it’ll be good for you.”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / 123person

יֹאמַר־נָ֤א אֲדֹנֵ֨נוּ֙ עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ

command now lord_of,our your=servants to=your=face

The servants are humbly addressing Saul in the third person and also humbly speaking about themselves in the third person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate this using the second person for Saul and the first person for the servants. Alternate translation: [May you, our master, please say to us, who are your servants to your face]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotesinquotes

לְפָנֶ֔יךָ יְבַקְשׁ֕וּ אִ֕ישׁ יֹדֵ֖עַ מְנַגֵּ֣ן בַּכִּנּ֑וֹר

to=your=face look_for (a)_man knowing playing in/on/at/with,lyre

If it would be clearer in your language, you could translate this so that there is not a quotation within a quotation. Alternate translation: [to your face that we should seek a man who knows how to play the lyre]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בִּֽהְי֨וֹת עָלֶ֤יךָ

in/on/at/with,is upon,you

The servants are speaking as if the spirit were physically on top of Saul. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [is troubling you] or [is making you afraid]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

וְנִגֵּ֥ן בְּיָד֖וֹ

and,play in=his/its=hand

It might seem that the expression by his hand contains extra information that would not be natural to express in your language. If so, you can shorten it. Alternate translation: [that he will strum]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְט֥וֹב לָֽךְ

and=good to/for=you(fs)

The servants are using a common expression of their culture. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and this will make you feel better]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:1-23 David was Saul’s replacement. There are striking similarities between the two: Samuel anointed both. Neither was pursuing the position. Both were unlikely candidates (Saul was from the smallest tribe; David was the youngest son). Both were impressive in appearance (9:2; 16:12). And the Spirit came mightily on each when he was anointed king (10:10; 11:6; 16:13). The key difference was that David was “a man after [God’s] own heart” (13:14; cp. 16:7), while Saul was not.
