uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וּגְדִ֥י עִזִּ֖ים אֶחָ֑ד

and,young_goat_of goats one(ms)

The author is using a common expression of his culture to mean a young goat. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [and a young goat]

Note 2 topic: translate-symaction

וַיִּשְׁלַ֛ח

and,sent

Sending the bread, wine, and goat to Saul was a symbolic action by which Jesse showed his respect for him as Israel’s king. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could explain the significance of this action. Alternate translation: [and he sent them respectfully as a gift]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

בְּיַד־דָּוִ֥ד

in/on/at/with,hand_of Dāvid

The author is using one part of David, his hand, to mean all of him in the act of bringing something. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [with David]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

16:1-23 David was Saul’s replacement. There are striking similarities between the two: Samuel anointed both. Neither was pursuing the position. Both were unlikely candidates (Saul was from the smallest tribe; David was the youngest son). Both were impressive in appearance (9:2; 16:12). And the Spirit came mightily on each when he was anointed king (10:10; 11:6; 16:13). The key difference was that David was “a man after [God’s] own heart” (13:14; cp. 16:7), while Saul was not.
