TSNTyndale Study Notes:

10:21-29 The ninth plague was the plague of darkness (10:21). The chief god of Egypt through the centuries, who appeared under several different names, was the sun. At this time he was known as Amon-Re. He was supreme over all the other gods and was considered to be the ultimate source of life. The Lord showed that the sun’s light is completely under his control; he could shut it off from Egypt proper, while leaving it to shine in Goshen in the northeast part of the country (10:23; see study note on 9:1-7).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

livestock,our & with,us & take & God,our and,we & know & serve & arrive,we

Here, we, our, and us each refers to the Israelites (same group as the speaker’s) while excluding Pharaoh and the Egyptians (listeners’ group). If your language distinguishes between forms of we, our, and us based on who is included, be sure to use the one appropriate to the described group.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

לֹ֤א תִשָּׁאֵר֙ פַּרְסָ֔ה

not left_behind hoof

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “We cannot leave behind a single animal”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

פַּרְסָ֔ה

hoof

Here the word hoof refers to the entire animal. If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “a single animal”

שָֽׁמָּה

there,to

The destination is unspecified. Previous context suggests it would be at the mountain of God (See: 3:1, especially 3:12, and 4:27), which would take three days of travel to reach (See: 3:18 and 5:3).
