TSNTyndale Study Notes:

23:1-49 This chapter, like ch 16, gives the history of the northern and southern kingdoms of Israel and Judah in the form of an extended metaphor. It graphically depicts Samaria and Jerusalem, the capital cities, as two immoral women. The metaphor emphasizes that their judgment was inevitable and well-deserved.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) I gave her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians

(Some words not found in UHB: for=so/thus/hence delivered,her in/on/at/with,hand lovers,her in/on/at/with,hand sons_of Assyria which/who lusted for,them )

The word “hand” refers to power or control. The two phrases have the same meaning and the second phrase explains that “her lovers” were “the Assyrians.” Alternate translation: “I gave her over to her lovers, the Assyrians” (See also: figs-parallelism)
