BrTrAnd he stood behind the gate looking eastward, and measured five hundred cubits with the measuring reed.

ULTHe measured the east side with a measuring stick—five hundred cubits with the measuring stick.[fn]

Instead of five hundred cubits, which some ancient and most modern versions read, Hebrew reads five hundred measuring sticks, which seems to be an error.

USTHe measured the four sides of the area. There was a wall around the area that was two-hundred and seventy meters long on each side.

BSB

42:16 See LXX; five hundred cubits from verse 17 LXX and implied in verses 16, 18, 19, and 20 is approximately 875 feet or 266.7 meters in length. Hebrew five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about, that is approximately 5,250 feet or 1,600 meters; similarly in verses 17, 18, 19, and 20.

42:16 Or “rod”

42:16 Literally “of measuring”

42:16 Hebrew has “reeds” here (= 5,250 feet), which is not correct; 500 cubits = 875 feet.

BBEHe went round and took the measure of it on the east side with the measuring rod, five hundred, measured with the rod all round.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

42:16-20 Having finished his tour of the inner courtyard, Ezekiel was shown the overall dimensions of the area. The whole complex was square, which denoted holiness and differentiated it from the less regular design of Solomon’s Temple and the Tabernacle before it, in which only the Most Holy Place was square.
• The description of the Temple finished where it began, with a mention of a wall all around it (see 40:5); Ezekiel reminds us again that the purpose of that wall was to separate what was holy from what was common.
