1:19-51 John’s Gospel gives limited attention to John the Baptist compared to the synoptic Gospels (Matt 3:1-6; Mark 1:2-6; Luke 1:1-24, 57-80; 3:1-13). Yet the apostle John wants us to see that John the Baptist correctly identified and exalted Jesus. John the Baptist’s disciples leave him and follow Jesus; Jesus took over the ministry John began, increasing as John decreased (John 3:30).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture
λέγει
˱he˲_/is/_saying
Here John uses the present tense in past narration in order to call attention to a development in the story.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ἴδε, ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
behold the Lamb ¬the ˱of˲_God
The phrase Lamb of God refers to Jesus. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: [Behold, Jesus, the Lamb of God]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
ἴδε
behold
John records John the Baptist using the term Behold to call his audience’s attention to what he is about to say. Your language may have a similar expression that you can use here.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Lamb ¬the ˱of˲_God
See how you translated this same phrase in John 1:29.
