TSNTyndale Study Notes:

14:13-14 The extensive demolition of Jerusalem’s wall and the thorough looting of the city testify to Jehoash’s overwhelming victory. Carrying off Temple and palace treasures and taking hostages are often noted in the annals of victorious Assyrian kings. See also 12:17-18; 18:13-15; 24:13-14; 25:8-21; 1 Kgs 14:25-26.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) He took

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_will_take DOM all/each/any/every the=gold and,the,silver and=DOM all/each/any/every the=vessels the,found house_of YHWH and,in/on/at/with,treasuries house_of the=king and=DOM sons_of the,hostages and,returned Samaria,to )

Here “He” refers to Jehoash and his army. Alternate translation: “Jehoash and his army came … Jehoash’s soldiers took”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) with hostages also, and returned to Samaria

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_will_take DOM all/each/any/every the=gold and,the,silver and=DOM all/each/any/every the=vessels the,found house_of YHWH and,in/on/at/with,treasuries house_of the=king and=DOM sons_of the,hostages and,returned Samaria,to )

This implies that Jehoash needed to take these hostages to prevent Amaziah from attacking again. This can be made explicit. Alternate translation: “and they also took to Samaria some prisoners to make sure that Amaziah would cause them no more trouble”
