ULTand it shall be for you for a tassel, and you shall see it, and you shall remember all the commandments of Yahweh, and you shall do them. And you shall not explore after your heart and after your eyes, them which you are prostituting after,

USTWhen you look at the tassels, you will remember all the instructions that I gave to you, and you will obey them. In that way, you will not be unfaithful to me. You will not be like an unfaithful prostitute who does the shameful things that she looks at and desires to do.

BSBThese will serve as tassels for you to look at, so that you may remember all the commandments of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by following your own heart and your own eyes.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

15:1-41 Chapters 1–14 took place in a relatively short period of time, but ch 15 describes the beginning of a long period—the bulk of the forty years in the wilderness—about which relatively little is known, though there are references to events that took place during the wilderness wanderings (e.g., Deut 8:2-6; 29:5-6; Josh 5:4-8; Ezek 20:10-26; Amos 5:25-26; Acts 7:42-43). During this period, Moses continued to deliver legislation to govern Israelite society, especially for that day when survivors of the wilderness would finally enter the Promised Land. This chapter deals with three categories of legal matters. Presented in the middle of stories about a stubborn and disobedient Israel, Num 15 raises hope that the Promised Land still awaited Israel’s descendants.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) to carry them out

(Some words not found in UHB: and=it_was to/for=you_all as,tassel and,look_at DOM=him/it and,remember DOM all/each/any/every commands YHWH and,do DOM=them and=not follow after heart,your_all's_own and=after your_all's=eyes which/who you_all prostitute after,them )

Alternate translation: “to obey them”

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וְלֹֽא־ תָתֻ֜רוּ אַחֲרֵ֤י לְבַבְכֶם֙ וְאַחֲרֵ֣י עֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם

and=not follow after heart,your_all's_own and=after your_all's=eyes

Here, explore after is a metaphor for thinking about something. Alternate translation: “so that you do not think about whatever your heart and eyes want”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

וְלֹֽא־ תָתֻ֜רוּ אַחֲרֵ֤י לְבַבְכֶם֙ וְאַחֲרֵ֣י עֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם

and=not follow after heart,your_all's_own and=after your_all's=eyes

Here the heart represents what a person wants, and the eyes represent what a person sees and wants. Alternate translation: “And you must not think about whatever you want”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲשֶׁר־ אַתֶּ֥ם זֹנִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם

which/who you_all prostitute after,them

Being unfaithful to God by choosing to do whatever they want is spoken of as if they were women who were unfaithful to their husband by choosing to have sinful relationships with other men.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֲשֶׁר־ אַתֶּ֥ם זֹנִ֖ים אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם

which/who you_all prostitute after,them

It can be stated clearly that this was a shameful thing to do. Alternate translation: “and be shamefully unfaithful to me” or “and do those things instead of obeying me”
