Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:17-46 The tabulation yields the same number of qualified men (603,550) as mentioned in Exod 38:26. Exodus 12:37 and Num 11:21 give an approximate number of 600,000. These numbers have been interpreted in different ways. They might reflect the literal size of this army (cp. Exod 1:9-10); alternatively, the figures might be symbolic, projected backward from a later period, or simply misunderstood in translation. See also study note on Exod 12:37.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן אֵ֚ת הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה

and=he/it_took Mosheh and,Aaron DOM the,men the=these

Here, took means that Moses and Aaron summoned these men to come to them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “And Moses and Aaron called these men to come to them”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִקְּב֖וּ בְּשֵׁמֽוֹת

which/who designated in/on/at/with,name

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who did the action, the previous verses indicate that Yahweh called these men. Alternate translation: “whom Yahweh had designated by names”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

בְּשֵׁמֽוֹת

in/on/at/with,name

Moses is leaving out a word that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You could supply these words from the context if it would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: “by their names”
