OET (OET-RV)Then Sha’ul sent him out of the room and appointed him as the commander of a thousand warriors, so he came and went in front of the people.[fn]

18:13 It’s not entirely clear what the implications of this coming and going were (and similarly at the end of v16). It could easily refer to him returning successfully from military excursions.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

(Occurrence 0) So Saul removed him from his presence

(Some words not found in UHB: and,removed,him Shāʼūl from,presence,his and,made,him to=him/it chief a_thousand and=he/it_went_out and,came_in to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the,army )

Alternate translation: “So Saul removed David from his presence”

Note 1 topic: translate-numbers

(Occurrence 0) a commander of a thousand

(Some words not found in UHB: and,removed,him Shāʼūl from,presence,his and,made,him to=him/it chief a_thousand and=he/it_went_out and,came_in to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the,army )

This could mean: (1) the word “thousand” represents the exact amount of soldiers that he would lead. Alternate translation: “a commander of 1,000 soldiers” or (2) the word translated as “thousand” does not represent exact number, but is the name of a large military division. Alternate translation: “a commander of a large military division” See how you translated a similar phrase in 1 Samuel 17:18.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

(Occurrence 0) David went out and came in before the people

(Some words not found in UHB: and,removed,him Shāʼūl from,presence,his and,made,him to=him/it chief a_thousand and=he/it_went_out and,came_in to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before the,army )

Here “the people” refers to the soldiers under David’s command. The phrases “went out” and “came in” are idioms that refer to leading the people into battle and leading them home from battle. Alternate translation: “David led his soldiers into battle and led them home from battle” (See also: figs-explicit)
