MSG(3-7)Every year this man went from his hometown up to Shiloh to worship and offer a sacrifice to God-of-the-Angel-Armies. Eli and his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as the priests of God there. When Elkanah sacrificed, he passed helpings from the sacrificial meal around to his wife Peninnah and all her children, but he always gave an especially generous helping to Hannah because he loved her so much, and because God had not given her children. But her rival wife taunted her cruelly, rubbing it in and never letting her forget that God had not given her children. This went on year after year. Every time she went to the sanctuary of God she could expect to be taunted. Hannah was reduced to tears and had no appetite.

NETPeninnah would behave this way year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the Lord’s house, Peninnah would upset her so that she would weep and refuse to eat.

1:7 the Tabernacle: Also called “the Temple of the Lord” in 1:9. These designations reflect that the Tabernacle, a portable structure, served as the central sanctuary at Shiloh.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / go

עֲלֹתָהּ֙

she=ascended

Here, went up indicates that in order to reach Shiloh, Elkanah had to travel from a lower location to a higher location because Shiloh was located in a mountainous region. See how you translated this in 1 Samuel 1:3.

Note 2 topic: writing-pronouns

עֲלֹתָהּ֙

she=ascended

Here, she refers to Hannah.
