TSNTyndale Study Notes:

20:14-16 faithful love: Hebrew khesed (see study note on 20:8). Jonathan was reminding David to keep his commitment to him when he became king. It was reasonable for Jonathan to be concerned that David might kill any descendant of Saul who could make a rival claim to his throne. Saul later made a similar request of David (24:21).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

General Information:

Jonathan asks David not to completely kill all his offspring so that a remnant will remain.

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) will you not show me the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh, that I may not die?

(Some words not found in UHB: and=not if still,I living_(creature) and=not show with=me kindness YHWH and=not die )

Jonathan asks this question to confirm that David will do this. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “please show me the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh, that I may not die”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

(Occurrence 0) show me the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh

(Some words not found in UHB: and=not if still,I living_(creature) and=not show with=me kindness YHWH and=not die )

The abstract noun faithfulness can be stated as faithful. Here, of Yahweh could mean: (1) “be faithful to me as Yahweh is faithful” or (2) “be faithful to me as Yahweh requires”
