OET (OET-LV)He_is_saying to_them, that For/Because the hard_heart of_you_all, Mōsaʸs permitted to_you_all to_send_away the wives of_you_all, but from the_beginning it_has_ not _become thus.

OET (OET-RV)It was because of your hard hearts that Mosheh allowed you to send away your wife,” Yeshua answered, “but it wasn’t like that at the beginning.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: translate-tense

λέγει

˱he˲_/is/_saying

To call attention to a development in the story, Matthew uses the present tense in past narration. If it would not be natural to do that in your language, you could use the past tense in your translation. Alternate translation: “He said”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

πρὸς τὴν σκληροκαρδίαν ὑμῶν

for the hard_heart ˱of˲_you_all

Here, the phrase your hardness of heart refers to obstinacy or unwillingness to listen and obey. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “Because you are hardheaded” or “Because you are so stubborn”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς

from /the/_beginning

Here, the phrase from the beginning refers to when God created everything that exists. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. See how you translated this phrase in 19:4. Alternate translation: “at the beginning of the world” or “at the beginning of creation”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

19:7-8 why did Moses say (literally command): The Pharisees thought Jesus had contradicted a command of the law (see Deut 24:1-4), but Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to their hard hearts. Jesus introduced the revolutionary principle that God’s permission is not necessarily his desire (see 1 Cor 6:12). Divorce is never God’s desire (Mal 2:14-16); it is an expression of human sin.
