OET (OET-LV)And having_left the Nazaret, having_come he_dwelt at Kafarnaʼoum, which is by_the_seaside in the_regions of_Zaboulōn/(Zəⱱūlūn) and Nefthaleim/(Naftālī),

OET (OET-RV)He moved from Nazareth across to Capernaum beside the lake in the region that had been given to the tribes of Zebulun and Naftali,

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καταλιπὼν τὴν Ναζαρὰ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί καταλιπών τήν Ναζαρέτ ἐλθών κατῴκησεν εἰς Καφαρναούμ τήν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλών καί Νεφθαλὶμ)

Matthew implies that when Jesus “withdrew into Galilee,” he first went to the city of Nazareth. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [he first went to Nazareth. Then, having left Nazareth]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς Καφαρναοὺμ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί καταλιπών τήν Ναζαρέτ ἐλθών κατῴκησεν εἰς Καφαρναούμ τήν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλών καί Νεφθαλὶμ)

It may be more natural in your language to say where Jesus went before saying where he lived. If so, you could move in Capernaum so that it goes with having come. Alternate translation: [having come to Capernaum, he lived there]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τὴν παραθαλασσίαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί καταλιπών τήν Ναζαρέτ ἐλθών κατῴκησεν εἰς Καφαρναούμ τήν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλών καί Νεφθαλὶμ)

Matthew is referring to the sea of Galilee. The town of Capernaum was at the edge of this sea. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [by the Galilee sea]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλὼν καὶ Νεφθαλείμ

in ˓the˒_regions (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί καταλιπών τήν Ναζαρέτ ἐλθών κατῴκησεν εἰς Καφαρναούμ τήν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις Ζαβουλών καί Νεφθαλὶμ)

The words Zebulun and Naphtali are the names of the tribes that lived in these territories many years earlier. Matthew uses these names to connect where Jesus lived with the prophecy he will quote in [4:15](../04/15.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could clarify that these are names of tribes. Alternate translation: [in the territories that the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali formerly lived in]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

4:13 Capernaum was in Galilee, a district viewed negatively by the religious establishment in Judea and Jerusalem (see John 1:46; 7:41-42, 52). Many Judeans considered Galileans to be uncultured, with a lazy command of the language (cp. Matt 26:73), a factor sometimes thought to affect the accuracy of their teachings. Galilee also had a proportionately larger Gentile population than Judea did.
