OET (OET-LV)A_person_of faithfulness(es) will_be_great_of blessings and_one_who_hastens to_gain_riches not he_will_go_unpunished.

OET (OET-RV)A faithful person will have great blessing,
⇔ ^ but the one trying to get rich quick won’t go unpunished.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

Some other headings for this section are:

More Proverbs of Solomon (NIV)

Proverbs of Solomon Collected by Hezekiah (NET)

These are also wise things that Solomon said

28:20

Notice the parallel parts that contrast in meaning:

20a A faithful man will abound with blessings,

20bbut one eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

This proverb contrasts a trustworthy person with someone who wants to get rich quickly. The contrasting results experienced by these two kinds of people are great blessing and certain punishment.

28:20a

A faithful man will abound with blessings,

A faithful man: The words faithful man refer to someone who is trustworthy. People can trust him, because he is honest and dependable in what he says and does.

will abound with blessings: In Hebrew, the phrase will abound with blessings is literally “great of blessings.” The phrase has a general meaning here that is not limited to spiritual blessings. It refers to any benefits that a trustworthy person experiences, including good relationships and a happy and successful life.

Some other ways to translate this line are:

A dependable man will receive many blessings (NJPS)

Honest people will lead a full, happy life. (GNT)

28:20b

but one eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

but one eager to be rich: This phrase refers to a person who tries to get rich in a hurry. The contrast with the parallel part in 28:20a implies that the person cannot be trusted and uses dishonest means in his haste to make money.

will not go unpunished: This phrase means that the person will definitely be punished.

Some other ways to translate this line are:

But if you are in a hurry to get rich, you are going to be punished. (GNT)

but people who are dishonest in their efforts to gain wealth quickly will not escape punishment

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

אִ֣ישׁ אֱ֭מוּנוֹת & וְאָ֥ץ

(a)_man faithful & and,[one_who]_hastens

A man of faithfulness and one who hurries refer to these types of people in general, not specific people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use more natural expressions. Alternate translation: “Any person of faithfulness … but any person who hurries”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

אִ֣ישׁ אֱ֭מוּנוֹת

(a)_man faithful

Here Solomon is using the possessive form to describe a man who is characterized by faithfulness. If your language would not use the possessive form for this, you could use a different expression. Alternate translation: “A faithful man”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

רַב

great//chief/captain

See how you translated the abstract noun abundance in [5:23](../05/23.md).

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / litotes

לֹ֣א יִנָּקֶֽה

not go_unpunished

See how you translated this phrase in [6:29](../06/29.md).

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

28:20 quick riches: Wealth must be earned ethically, or it will cause harm and will not last (see 13:11, cp. 10:2; 11:18; 13:22; 21:6).
