OET (OET-LV) And_he/it_went the_Philistine coming and_closer to Dāvid and_the_man the_bearer the_shield in_front_of_him.
OET (OET-RV) Then Goliat came closer and closer to David, with his shield-bearer walking in front of him.
Note 1 topic: translate-tense
וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְקָרֵ֖ב אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד
and=he/it_went the,Philistine came and,closer to/towards Dāvid
Following the conventions of his language, the author is repeating forms of the verb “came” to indicate progressive action. Express this using the appropriate verbal form in your language. Alternate translation: [And the Philistine kept coming nearer to David]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְקָרֵ֖ב אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד
and=he/it_went the,Philistine came and,closer to/towards Dāvid
There could be a suggestion here that Goliath had to walk slowly and deliberately because of the heavy armor he was wearing, in contrast to the way David “ran … to meet him” in [17:48](../17/48.md). Alternate translation: [And the Philistine lumbered slowly toward David]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / hendiadys
הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְקָרֵ֖ב
came and,closer
This expression conveys a single idea by using two words connected with and. The word near tells for what purpose Goliath was coming. Alternate translation: [coming near] or [approaching]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
לְפָנָֽיו
in,front_of,him
See how you translated this expression in [17:7](../17/07.md). Alternate translation: [was in front of him]

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.
