TSNTyndale Study Notes:

35:20-24 The narrative jumps from Josiah’s eighteenth year (622 BC) to the year of his death (609 BC). The decline of the Assyrian Empire brought Egypt and Babylon, two great powers that had long been subject to Assyria, into conflict with each other. King Neco of Egypt, who had allied with Assyria to resist Babylonian expansion, asked Josiah to allow free passage of his army. Josiah’s interception might have been the result of a coalition with Babylon, or it might have been his own attempt to establish independence from Egypt. Josiah’s death was caused by his disobedience to a divine oracle delivered by a Gentile king.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

(Occurrence 0) What have I to do with you, king of Judah?

(Some words not found in UHB: and,sent to=him/it messengers to=say what? to/for=me and,between,you king Yehuda not against,you you(ms) the=day that/for/because/then/when to/towards house_of war_of,I and,God he/it_had_said to,hurry,me stop to/for=yourself(m) opposing,God which/who with,me and,not destroy,you )

Necho uses this rhetorical question to tell Josiah that he is not in conflict with him and that Josiah should not attack him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this question as a statement. Alternate translation: “You have no reason to attack me, king of Judah.”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

(Occurrence 0) I am not coming against you

(Some words not found in UHB: and,sent to=him/it messengers to=say what? to/for=me and,between,you king Yehuda not against,you you(ms) the=day that/for/because/then/when to/towards house_of war_of,I and,God he/it_had_said to,hurry,me stop to/for=yourself(m) opposing,God which/who with,me and,not destroy,you )

Here the king Josiah represents his kingdom. Alternate translation: “I am not fighting your kingdom”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

(Occurrence 0) against the house with which

(Some words not found in UHB: and,sent to=him/it messengers to=say what? to/for=me and,between,you king Yehuda not against,you you(ms) the=day that/for/because/then/when to/towards house_of war_of,I and,God he/it_had_said to,hurry,me stop to/for=yourself(m) opposing,God which/who with,me and,not destroy,you )

Here the word “house” refers to the house of Babylon, where “house” is a metonym for the kingdom. The kingdom is a synechdoche representing the Babylonian army. Alternate translation: “against the house of Babylon, with whom” (See also: figs-synecdoche)
