3:14-39 This first phase of a two-stage registration of the tribe of Levi (see 4:34-49 for stage two) summarized each family group’s special responsibilities (described in greater detail in 4:1-33). This numbering was not linked with military duties, so it enrolled male Levites from the age of one month (3:40-41).
• Three family groups are descended from Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, the three sons of Levi. These clans (often called the Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites) later inherited the “cities of refuge” (Josh 21) and filled various important posts in the Jerusalem Temple (2 Chr 29:3-17).
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
וְקַלְעֵ֣י הֶֽחָצֵ֗ר
and,hangings the,courtyard
The phrase hangings of the courtyard refers to the curtains that were used to form a fence around the courtyard, as described in Exodus 27:9–15. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: “and the curtains hanging around the courtyard”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun
וְאֵת֙ מֵֽיתָרָ֔יו לְכֹ֖ל עֲבֹדָתֽוֹ
and=DOM cords,its to=all/each/any/every service,these
In this clause, the word its represents the previously mentioned parts of the tent of meeting in general, not one particular part of it. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a more natural expression. Alternate translation: “and their ropes for all their service”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
לְכֹ֖ל עֲבֹדָתֽוֹ
to=all/each/any/every service,these
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of service, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “for all that serves it” or “for all maintaining of it”
