TSNTyndale Study Notes:

6:1-21 The voluntary Nazirite vow allowed men or women to set themselves apart for the Lord. There was considerable variation in how the Nazirite lifestyle was practiced in various periods of Hebrew history. Vows were taken very seriously in ancient times as a well-established means of expressing devotion or gratitude to God. This vow could be temporary or permanent; it involved refraining from alcoholic drinks, hair cutting, and contact with corpses. Nazirite restrictions gave members of non-Levitical tribes a way to enter into a more demanding and highly respected relationship with God. The Nazirite vow is probably best known because of Samson (Judg 13–16). See also 1 Sam 1:11; Jer 35; Acts 18:8; 21:23-26; cp. Luke 1:15.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

נִזְר֔וֹ & נִזְרֽוֹ

separation,his & consecration,his

Here, separation is an idiom that means “dedication.” Alternate translation: “his dedication … his dedication”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

נִזְר֔וֹ & נִזְרֽוֹ

separation,his & consecration,his

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word separation, you can express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: “having dedicated himself to Yahweh … having dedicated himself to Yahweh”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

(Occurrence 0) Whatever else he may give

(Some words not found in UHB: this(f) law the,nazirite which/who vows offering,his to/for=YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in separation,his from,to/for,apart_from which/who she_can_afford his/its=hand in,accord_of vow,his which/who makes yes/correct/thus/so he/it_made/did on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in law consecration,his )

This refers to the Nazirite deciding to give other offering beyond what he has been commanded to give. The full meaning of this statement can be made clear. Alternate translation: “If he decides to give any additional offerings”

(Occurrence 0) he must keep the obligations of the vow he has taken

(Some words not found in UHB: this(f) law the,nazirite which/who vows offering,his to/for=YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in separation,his from,to/for,apart_from which/who she_can_afford his/its=hand in,accord_of vow,his which/who makes yes/correct/thus/so he/it_made/did on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in law consecration,his )

Alternate translation: “he must still obey the requirements of the vow he has taken”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

(Occurrence 0) he must keep the obligations … to keep the promise indicated by the law for the Nazirite

These two phrases mean basically the same thing and are combined to emphasize that he must obey the obligations of his vow.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

(Occurrence 0) the promise indicated by the law for the Nazirite

(Some words not found in UHB: this(f) law the,nazirite which/who vows offering,his to/for=YHWH on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in separation,his from,to/for,apart_from which/who she_can_afford his/its=hand in,accord_of vow,his which/who makes yes/correct/thus/so he/it_made/did on/upon/above/on_account_of//he/it_went_in law consecration,his )

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “the promise that the law for the Nazirite indicates”
