Section 25:1–29:27: This is Hezekiah’s collection of Solomon’s proverbs

This section is the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs. These proverbs were organized and copied by men who served King Hezekiah. Most scholars divide this section into two groups. These groups differ in several ways.

The first group (chapters 25–27) has many more comparisons and admonitions. In Hebrew, most of these comparisons are metaphors in which one or more illustrations precede the topic. Some English versions change the order so that the topic precedes the illustration(s). You should follow the order that expresses the meaning naturally and effectively in your language.

In the first group, many proverbs are one verse long. As with the individual proverbs in the main collection of Solomon’s proverbs (Section 10:1–22:16), they are not related to the proverbs around them. Other proverbs in this group are two or more verses long. Still others are one-verse proverbs that are closely related in theme. Proverbs in all three categories will be marked as separate paragraphs.

The second group (chapters 28–29) has more contrastive proverbs. The proverbs in this group are each one verse long. They will not be marked as separate paragraphs.

This proverb advises fathers to discipline their children. The intended results are peace of mind and great happiness.

^17aDiscipline your son, and he will give you rest;

^17bhe will bring delight to your soul.

In Hebrew, the commands are masculine singular. They are addressed to a father. The father was responsible for discipline in the home.

As in similar proverbs, there is no intention to exclude the mother. It is also assumed that parents should discipline daughters as well as sons. In some languages, it may be more natural to use a term that includes both. For example:

The BSB translates this verse as a command followed by two results. In some languages, it may be more natural to translate it as an “if” clause followed by two results. For example:

If you correct your children, they will bring you peace and happiness. (CEV)

Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;

Discipline/Correct your^(sing) son and he will cause your mind/heart to be peaceful/calm.
Rebuke/Warn your^(plur) children. If you do that, they will heed what you say, and you will have no reason to be worried/ashamed.
If your^(sing/plur) child obeys when you advise/warn him, you^(sing/plur) will be calm/peaceful

Discipline your son: This clause is identical to the first clause in 19:18, but that verse focuses more on physical measures. Here the father’s Discipline primarily involves words that advise, rebuke, correct, or warn his son. His words are intended to correct the son’s wrong behavior. See discipline in the Glossary.

and he will give you rest: In this context, rest refers to peace of mind or calmness. This clause implies that the son heeds his father’s discipline. As a result, the father will not need to worry about or fear embarrassment from the son’s wrong behavior.Whybray (p. 402), Hubbard (p. 453). Some other ways to translate this clause are:

he will bring delight to your soul: As in many other verses, the word soul refers to the person’s inner self. Some versions translate it with the word “heart.” For example:

he will give delight to your heart (ESV)

Here Solomon speaks of a son causing his parents to feel delighted as if delights were objects that he can give to them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translate: “and he will delight your being”
