TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:1-25 The reaffirmation of Saul’s kingship at Gilgal (11:12-15) was the final step in his installation as king. The event was a fitting occasion for Samuel’s farewell address as leader of Israel.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

וְעַתָּ֗ה

and=now

Speakers in this culture used the expression And now to introduce their main point. See how you translated this expression in [6:7](../06/07.md). Alternate translation: [Now this is the main thing I want us to do today:]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וְאִשָּׁפְטָ֥ה אִתְּכֶ֖ם

and,plead with,you_all

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [and let us judge which of us was right]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְאִשָּׁפְטָ֥ה אִתְּכֶ֖ם

and,plead with,you_all

Samuel assumes that these Israelites will know that he is referring to their request for a king. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [and let us judge whether you were right to ask for a king or I was right to say that you should not have asked]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה

to=(the)_face_of/in_front_of/before YHWH

The author is using the term face by association to mean the presence of a person. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression or plain language. See how you translated a similar expression in [1:12](../01/12.md). Alternate translation: [here in the presence of Yahweh]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

אֵ֚ת כָּל־צִדְק֣וֹת יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה אִתְּכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־אֲבוֹתֵיכֶֽם

DOM all/each/any/every righteous_acts_of YHWH which/who he/it_had_made for,you_all and=DOM ancestors_of,your_all's

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of righteousness, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: [in light of all of the righteous deeds of Yahweh that he has done with you and with your fathers]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

אֵ֚ת כָּל־צִדְק֣וֹת יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה אִתְּכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־אֲבוֹתֵיכֶֽם

DOM all/each/any/every righteous_acts_of YHWH which/who he/it_had_made for,you_all and=DOM ancestors_of,your_all's

Samuel assumes that his listeners will know that by righteousness, he means specifically how Yahweh delivered them and their ancestors from their enemies and oppressors. You could indicate this explicitly in your translation if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [in light of all the things that Yahweh has done to deliver you and your fathers]

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

אֲבוֹתֵיכֶֽם

ancestors_of,your_all's

See how you translated this expression in [12:6](../12/06.md). Alternate translation: [your ancestors] or [our ancestors]
