Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וְהִכָּ֔נִי & וְהִכִּיתִ֔יו

and,kill,me & and,kill,him

See how you translated the similar term “struck” in [4:2](../04/02.md). Alternate translation: [and he kills me … and I kill him]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

וְאִם־אֲנִ֤י אֽוּכַל־לוֹ֙

and=if I prevail to=him/it

Goliath is leaving out some of the words that in many languages a sentence would need in order to be complete. You can supply these words from the context if that would be clearer in your language. Alternate translation: [But if I am able to fight successfully against him] or [But if I prevail against him]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism

וִהְיִ֤יתֶם לָ֨נוּ֙ לַעֲבָדִ֔ים וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֖ם אֹתָֽנוּ

and=you_all_will_be to/for=us as,servants and,serve DOM,us

These two phrases mean basically the same thing. If it would be clearer in your language, you could combine them. Alternate translation: [then you will become our servants]
